When It Feels Like You Can’t Move Forward

You've talked your way through everything, yet thinking about the emotions and such just isn't doing the trick. Your body still feels it, you feel stuck and wonder is there anyway out of this. The memories still seem to be lingering and heavy. It takes you right back to the traumatic events you've experienced in your life. You feel stuck, on high alert and your body is in overdrive. Anxiety kicks in, you feel overwhelmed, and panic shows up unexpectedly. You feel like something deeper is unresolved.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and it doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It often means your brain hasn’t fully processed what you’ve been through.

EMDR May Help If...

EMDR is often helpful when something from the past still feels like it is affecting your present.

  • You feel easily triggered
Small moments can bring up intense emotional reactions.
  • You keep replaying painful memories
Thoughts, images, or feelings come back even when you try to move on.
  • You feel stuck in anxiety or panic
Your body reacts as if something bad is about to happen.
  • You know something logically, but don’t feel it emotionally
You may know “it wasn’t my fault,” but still feel guilt or shame.
  • Talk therapy has helped, but only up to a point
You understand the issue, but your nervous system still feels activated.
  • You want healing without retelling every detail
EMDR does not require you to describe everything that happened.
If several of these feel familiar, EMDR therapy may be a good fit.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR therapy can help when painful experiences, memories, or beliefs still feel active in your daily life.

Trauma & PTSD

Reduce the intensity of traumatic memories, triggers, flashbacks, and body-based trauma responses.

Anxiety & Panic

Support anxiety that feels connected to fear, shame, past experiences, or situations that still feel unsafe.

Grief & Loss

Process painful images, memories, guilt, regret, or unresolved emotions after a significant loss.

Childhood Experiences

Work through early experiences that shaped how you see yourself, relationships, safety, or the world.

Negative Beliefs

Shift painful beliefs like “I’m not safe,” “I’m not enough,” “I should have done more,” or “It was my fault.”

Emotional Triggers

Lower the intensity of reactions that feel bigger than the present moment or hard to control.

You do not need to know exactly what category you fit into. Your therapist can help you identify what feels stuck and whether EMDR is a good fit.

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

1. We Start With Safety

Your therapist will help you build grounding tools before beginning deeper memory processing.

2. We Identify What Feels Stuck

Together, you and your therapist will identify memories, beliefs, or triggers that may be affecting you now.

3. We Process at Your Pace

You remain in control. EMDR does not require you to share every detail or push beyond what feels manageable.

EMDR is not about forcing you to relive the past. It is about helping your brain and body feel less controlled by it.

Why EMDR Works When Talking Therapy Isn’t Enough

Sometimes, insight alone isn’t enough to create change. Talk therapy has it's place and time, but EMDR changes things.
That’s because distressing experiences can become “stored” in the brain and body in a way that keeps them feeling present—even when you logically know you’re safe. EMDR works by helping your brain reprocess those experiences at a deeper level, so they no longer trigger the same emotional intensity.

Instead of just managing symptoms, EMDR helps address the root cause.

EMDR Therapy FAQs

What is EMDR therapy?+
EMDR therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they feel less overwhelming. It is often used for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, grief, and painful past experiences.
How does EMDR work?+
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, while you focus on specific memories or experiences. This can help your brain process what has been stuck so the memory feels less intense and less present.
What can EMDR help with?+
EMDR may help with PTSD, childhood trauma, anxiety, panic, grief, disturbing memories, emotional triggers, phobias, and negative beliefs about yourself that developed after difficult experiences.
Do I have to talk about every detail during EMDR?+
No. EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of what happened. Your therapist will help you stay grounded and move at a pace that feels safe and manageable.
Is EMDR therapy only for trauma?+
No. While EMDR is widely known for trauma and PTSD, it may also help with anxiety, grief, panic, distressing memories, and emotional reactions connected to past experiences.
Can EMDR therapy be done online in Texas?+
Yes. Transform & Renew Counseling offers EMDR therapy in person in San Antonio and virtually across Texas when clinically appropriate.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?+
The number of EMDR sessions depends on your goals, history, symptoms, and readiness. Some clients notice changes in a shorter period of time, while others benefit from a longer therapy process.
